Dance Vocabulary in the Scriptures

Hebrew:

1. Cabab- to revolve around a sacred object ~ Psalms 26:6

2. Chagag – to move in a circle or leap in celebration ~ Exodus 23:14 & I Samuel 30:16

3. Chul/Chil – to whirl or twist ~ Judges 21:21-23

4. Dalag – to leap or spring ~ Isaiah 35:6 & Zephaniah 1:9

5. Gul/Gil – to spin around in joy ~ Psalms 2:11, Psalms 13:4,5 & Zechariah 9:9

6. Halal – to celebrate, boast, or make a show

7. Hiliykah – a walking procession or caravan ~ Psalms 68:24-25

8. Karar – to dance or whirl, to run or move in a circle ~ II Samuel 6:14

9. Machol/Macholah – a round dance or company chorus ~ Jeremiah 31:4, Lamentations 5:15, Psalm 30:11, Song of Solomon 6:13, Judges 11:34 & Jeremiah 31:4

10. Pazaz – to bound or leap ~ Genesis 49:24 & II Samuel 6:16

11. Rekad – to stomp or spring or skip or jump in dance ~ I Chronicles 15:29, Joel 2:5 & Nahum 3:2

12. Shuwr – to sing or minstrel or turn or travel in song ~ Exodus 15:1, Psalms 33:3, Psalms 100:2, Isaiah 54:1 & Jeremiah 20:13

13. Towdah – to extend the hands as a sacrifice or thanks or praise ~ Jeremiah 33:11

14. Yada – to revere or worship with graceful gestures or extended hands ~ I Chronicles 16:4 & Ezra 3:10
